The Samaritan Woman:
So, I was led to this story a few weeks ago and started taking notes on it. This was not my first time reading the story in fact I thought I knew it well but God wanted to show me I actually knew very little about it. So, he opened my eyes and started to show me some truths about it and how it applies to not only my life but the world around us. So, let's go ahead and dive right in.
First, I would like to start off with some truths about what Jesus is doing and also some about the woman herself.
Jesus was in Judea and headed to Galilee. (verse 3)
Jesus had to go through Samaria (verse 4)
Jesus was tired from the long walk, about 25 miles (verse 6)
Jesus sat down by Jacobs well in Sychar Samaria around noon (verses 4-6)
Jesus was alone without his disciples (verse 8)
Jesus is the Messiah (verse 26)
The woman was Samaritan (verse 7)
She came around noon time to draw water (verse 7)
God has a gift for her salvation (verse 10)
She doesn’t have a husband she has actually had 5 different husbands and the man she is living with right now is not her husband. (verses 17 and 18)
Samaritans and Jews don’t associate (verse 9)
Many Samaritans believe because of the woman's testimony. (verse 39)
So now that we know some truths about both the who what where and when. Let's unpack this a little. We will start with the Samaritan woman she was at the well at noon time which is the hottest part of the day. Why do we think that is? Well if I had to guess it was because she wanted to go there to avoid the judgements and scoffs of the other women who would more than likely come first thing in the morning or after the sun would set when it was cooler. So, she was avoiding people. To her it was more important to not face ridicule than to avoid the heat.
How many of us do this in life? We go out of our way to avoid people or places that are hard for us to deal with. We are so wary of all the heart ache and mess that we avoid it altogether. But I believe that Jesus was there at that specific time to give her just what she needed. The gift that God had for her the living water of salvation. That’s what we call a divine appointment. Sometimes we have to be separated from the noise of everyday life just to be able to hear what he is whispering to us.
Another thing we must notice is sometimes we focus on the wrong thing. Jesus was there to give her salvation (living water) and she is stuck up on the details of the water and how deep the well is. And how he shouldn’t be talking to her since she is a Samaritan and he is a Jew. This points out the fact to me that Jesus doesn’t care how the world labels you. He cares more about what he thinks about you. The world can falsely label you they can heap shame upon you but at the end of the day none of that matters. If you would just believe what he says your identity is.
When I look around me and see all that’s going on in our country and the division and strife that is happening, I have to think that maybe we should stop focusing on all the labels and the differences we all have and just focus on the joy we have in knowing that none of that matter in the eyes of Jesus. I honestly believe that God is looking down and wondering when we are going to wake up and realize that our identity lies in him not in the color of our skin, our nationality, our gender, our socio-economic status, or even how much sin we do. We are all so focused on the wrong things. Focus on him and what he thinks of you, not what your neighbor who doesn’t like you thinks. Focus on what he can give you because every single person in this world is human and has a sin nature just like you. So, they will fail you in some way or another. But Jesus never fails us.
Now with all that said I want to close this with the most important thing of all. Despite who the towns people thought her to be when Jesus gave her salvation and showed her, he knew the truth about her actions thus far and still didn’t care. He was still there to be her Messiah. She then went on to share with them the truth he had instilled in her heart and it had a profound effect on them to the point that they got saved. So, the point is don’t let your past affect your present. If you make a mistake own up to it to Jesus ask him to forgive it (HE WILL) then move on from it and show how merciful he is on you. Your testimony can and will help other people.
This is something I have struggled with a long time not wanting to share my testimony for fear of the judgement of other people and what they would think of me. Fearing that the people who know me wouldn’t listen because they don’t think God can use me. And fearing the people who don’t know my past will change their minds and think poorly of me. But every time I believe this lie, I miss out on the opportunity to show how full of mercy and grace our Father truly is. He is calling us all to step outside of our comfort zones and be courageous. To shine the light of his message to the world so they can know him and be changed too. I truly believe this is the answer to how we change the hatred and divide in this world. Because once people know not only in their mind but also in their heart his love. That’s when they put down their stones and walk away from the strife.
Now you may say to me this sounds too good to be real what about the people who will never hear, understand and accept it. Yes, there will be people out there that will still relish in the evil and hatred but that’s why knowing your identity and God’s heart for his people will help you fight those battles. Because we do not fight against flesh and blood but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. (Ephesians 6:12)
I thank all of you who took the time to read this. I hope that you found encouragement in this message and If it has affected you in anyway, I would love for you to share this in the comments section.
