Halloween has really gotten a bum rap over the years due to the number of sick and creepy people in the world. Halloween, like most holidays, is known by more than one name - Allhalloween, All Hallows' Eve, or All Saints' Eve, and some of us refer to it as Samhain (pronounced SOW-in). An ancient Celtic festival marking one of their four most important festival quarter days of the year. Samhain or Halloween commenced on the eve of October 31st and ushered in the Celtic New Year on November 1st. The Celts experienced this as a liminal (threshold) period when the normally strict boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead. It also indicated a change in the season. At the end of the harvesting season, the entire natural world moves into its annual dormant state of hibernation, essentially “dying” until its annual rebirth the following spring.
To children of all ages, Halloween became the time for running from house to house with your Trick Or treat bag collecting candy from every house you saw. A time to dress up in funny, strange, and sometimes scary outfits. Ornamentations of skulls, dancing skeletons, carved pumpkins, or jack-o’-lanterns, lights, and wonderful foods. It was or is a magickal time for Ghosts, vampires, werewolves, witches, zombies, and so much more. 20 - 25 years ago everything started changing, people started to harm the once playful children by placing razor blades in fresh fruits, needles, injecting candy with drugs and parents rightfully grew concerned for their young and the door-to-door trick or treating all but came to a stop. Trunk-a-Treat became a big thing but that too is starting to die out.
Halloween is said to be evil, the work of the devil and yet The Bible does not mention Halloween. However, both the ancient origins of Halloween and its modern customs show it to be a celebration based on false beliefs about the dead and invisible spirits, or demons. Who has the right to say whose beliefs are false and whose isn’t? Could it possibly be that the foul Democrats actually got their start during the ancient Celtics?
