Horse chestnut seed extract (Aesculus hippocastanum) - Horse chestnut seed extract (HCSE) has been used extensively in Europe for both preventing and treating varicose veins and other venous disorders. Standardized HCSE has been safely used in controlled clinical trials involving over 700 patients and is approved for use by the German Commission E for the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI)—a common but often underdiagnosed cause of leg pain and swelling, frequently associated with varicose veins. A systematic review of clinical trials published in 2012 also concluded that HCSE is an effective and safe short-term treatment option for CVI, with additional studies recommended to confirm long-term results. HCSE tones and strengthens blood vessels and inhibits the action of enzymes that can damage capillary walls. HCSE also promotes blood circulation through the veins, reduces achiness, inflammation and fatigue in the legs, and counteracts the development of edema by decreasing capillary filtration and sealing capillary walls to prevent the leakage of fluid into surrounding tissues. For pre-existing edema, HCSE helps reduce swelling by stimulating fluid excretion. HCSE is standardized to contain the active ingredient aescin (also called escin), which has been shown to provide strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, as well as the ability to increase venous tone. HCSE is contraindicated for individuals with existing kidney or liver impairment or bleeding disorders. Due to the natural content of coumarin derivatives, HCSE should be used with caution by those taking aspirin, warfarin or other anticoagulants, as the effects of such medications may be enhanced.5,13-19

Broccoli flowers (Brassica oleracea var. italica) contain high levels of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and anticarcinogenic (anti-cancer) compounds, including glutathione, a powerful antioxidant and critical component of the body’s natural defense and detoxification systems. Broccoli also contains sulforaphane, a potent inducer of phase I and II detoxification enzymes required for the detoxification of toxic metabolites, oxidized nutrients, carcinogens (cancer-causing substances) and environmental toxins.68-72

Kelp has been shown to promote thyroid function and improve a sluggish metabolism, particularly because kelp is rich in iodine. In fact, seaweeds like kelp are among nature’s richest sources of iodine. The synthesis and secretion of thyroid hormones depend on sufficient levels of iodine, along with the amino acid tyrosine. The thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4) consists of approximately 65% iodine, while triiodothyronine (T3) contains up to 59% iodine. Since iodine is not stored in the body, it must be obtained daily from the diet in order to maintain healthy thyroid function. An iodine deficiency is associated with hypothyroidism (low thyroid function), as well as mental retardation and cretinism (stunted physical and mental development in children). Kelp is also a plentiful source of calcium, potassium and some B-vitamins.1-3,19,22-24

Copper is a trace mineral that is a required cofactor for iodothyronine iodinase, the enzyme that converts T4 to T3. Animal studies suggest that a copper deficiency may cause problems with the conversion of T4 to T3, and thus, adversely affect thyroid hormone metabolism. In addition, copper deficiency may also impair T4 production or release. It is important to note that excess zinc may interfere with copper absorption, thereby increasing copper requirements.2,4,7,12-15

Neroli oil’s fragrance is both uplifting and calming. While one individual may respond to the stimulating or enlivening aspect of the aroma, another may experience a more relaxing, sedative effect, depending on the state of the individual. Neroli uplifting, antidepressant qualities have long been used to treat depression and melancholia (a mental disorder marked by depression, apathy and withdrawal); while neroli’s calming, sedative effects make it valuable for relieving anxiety and nervous tension and promoting restful sleep. Hence, neroli oil is recommended for a variety of psychological problems, especially those of emotional origin, including extreme anxiety, depression, feelings of desperation, emotional shock or trauma, fear and distress, hypersensitivity, hysteria, insomnia, nervous tension, nervousness, stage fright and pre-performance “jitters,“ PMS, stress-related disorders, and even the inability to confront emotional fears. Neroli sweet scent is also particularly helpful for relaxing hyperactive children.2-10

Agaricus mushroom - Agaricus, commonly known as button mushroom, is one of the most popular edible and medicinal mushrooms worldwide. Agaricus contains active compounds that exhibit immunomodulatory, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activity. Animal research has confirmed that agaricus influences both innate and adaptive immune responses. In addition, agaricus contains higher concentrations of vitamin D than other mushroom species. Furthermore, agaricus contains prebiotic carbohydrates that have been shown to favorably alter the composition and function of the gut microbiome in animal studies and in healthy adults.3,11,55-62

Chaga mushroom - Chaga has been used for centuries as a traditional medicine in many North American and North Eurasian cultures to treat illnesses such as diabetes, gastritis, ulcers, infections and tumors, and to prevent cardiac and hepatic disorders. Chaga has been reported to have immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antiviral and hepatoprotective effects. Modern research has identified active compounds in chaga that exhibit antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and anti-tumor properties. For example, chaga has demonstrated strong antioxidant and immunostimulatory effects and has inhibited both hepatitis C and human immunodeficiency viruses in vitro. Animal studies conducted on chaga have confirmed anti-inflammatory effects in experimental colitis; improvements in insulin sensitivity and fat metabolism in mouse models of obesity; potent immunomodulatory activity in chemically immunosuppressed mice; and significant anti-fatigue effects during short-term intensive exercise.40-48

Pantothenic acid plays an important role in the Kreb’s Cycle, a process that provides for amino acid synthesis, cellular respiration and the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) energy which fuels muscle contractions. A double-blind study in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise involved well-trained distance runners, half of whom were given daily supplements of pantothenic acid. The runners who received pantothenic acid improved their respiratory system efficiency, using 8% less oxygen. Also, they experienced almost 17% less lactic acid buildup than the placebo group.
Pantothenic acid is involved in the conversion of amino acids and lipids into glucose and also functions as a component in the formation of antibodies, in the maintenance of healthy central nervous system function, and in the synthesis of sterols and steroid hormones.
In 1980, the General Practitioner Researcher published a study showing the profound effects of pantothenic acid supplementation for decreasing the pain, stiffness and overall disability associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Research published in Lancet confirmed that individuals with rheumatoid arthritis had much lower levels of pantothenic acid in their blood than those without the disease. Furthermore, the lower the pantothenic acid level, the worse the symptoms. A double-blind study of people with rheumatoid arthritis revealed that those who received pantothenic acid supplementation had much less morning stiffness, pain and overall disability than those in the control group.
Pantothenic acid is an important component for maintaining healthy digestive function. This vitamin also speeds the healing process, reduces hair loss, reverses the graying of hair, renews old cells and extends the life span of cells, and decreases “age spots” on the skin. In fact, pantothenic acid helps prevent premature aging and wrinkles.
