She is a highly regarded leader, having served as the Minister of the Interior. She is a faithful Christian and a member of the Lutheran Church. She was a medical doctor prior to entering parliament. She has just been charged with three crimes by the top criminal prosecutor in Finland. Here are her supposed “crimes.” 1. In 2004, she wrote a pamphlet on the biblical view of sexuality. It is important to note that the hate speech law she has been charged with violating wasn’t even enacted until several years later. 2. In 2018, she voiced clear and sober opinions about sexuality on a TV talk show. Again, her comments were based squarely on the Word of God. 3. In 2019, she tweeted a comment aimed at her own denomination when it sponsored a Gay Pride parade. She said that no one should be proud of what the Bible calls sinful behavior. Of course, Finland is a party to the European Convention on Human Rights which protects freedom of speech—in addition to its national constitution. ADF International (I am its CEO), is helping defend this courageous lady. The case is now in the national courts and could ultimately end up in the European Court of Human Rights. This is an outrageous abuse of power. But it is exactly the moment we live in. Do not think this cannot happen in the United States. All of the pieces are in place for it to happen and there are strong voices in the Democratic Party who want to proceed in this dangerous direction. This is not something that American Christians can ignore. Many voices will be talking about this case, but it is ADF International that is actually helping provide her legal defense.
