I'm assuming you want to build a pitched roof. In this case, skylights are indeed a very economical solution. You can get creative with the interior decoration to make it look standard. For example, imagine different angles away from a roof light.
Also, installing roof lights to provide good lighting and a view of the sky above will fill the space with natural light within the confines of a standard pitched roof.
