Just because he was found not guilty doesn't mean he is a hero. Just because he carried a gun at a protest doesn't make him a hero. I understand that many are so distraught and skeptical about the monopoly of law that they viewed this case as a bellwether if gun rights and self defense are paramount within the US justice system, however, in the midst of the calamity and hysteria a true hero story was ignored.
A true hero you say? Yes.
Someone who was minding his own business but recognized a potential threat to innocent life. This hero acted not in self defense but in preservation of life. He heard gun shots, he ran towards the threat and eliminated a deranged mass shooter. That someone was named Johnny Hurley and he is a true hero. He risked his life to save others and his life was taken by police.
Now that is a story we should be focused on but instead media programming and identity politics tunnel vision has the entire nation divided and fighting about an inherently divisive topic, as all discussions of race, whether warranted or not, usually are.
The way forward to progressing to a free society isn't embracing divide by doubling down, it's finding common ground and recognizing the common enemy. While we agree with the verdict of the Rittenhouse case as a clear cut self defense in a sea of complicated circumstances, we don't need to champion someone acting in self defense as a hero or turn them into a false idol so we can dunk on our political opponents. He protected himself. That is not heroic. That is self preservation. Johnny Hurley is the real hero and it's a goddamn shame that his story is being overshadowed by media propelled division.
