The Minneapolis City Council unanimously approved $6.4 million in funding for the police department to hire dozens of new officers despite recent calls to defund the police department following the killing of George Floyd and the subsequent Black Lives Matter riots in the city.
The city’s police department reported only having 638 officers on hand, 200 less than normal, after many officers resigned after the violent anti-police riots in the city in the summer of 2020.
Three Minneapolis city council members have reportedly called for the police department to be replaced with a department of public safety, involving mental health professionals trained to de-escalate situations rather than relying solely on traditional policing.
