The city’s police department reported only having 638 officers on hand, 200 less than normal, after many officers resigned after the violent anti-police riots in the city in the summer of 2020. Three Minneapolis city council members have reportedly called for the police department to be replaced with a department of public safety, involving mental health professionals trained to de-escalate situations rather than relying solely on traditional policing.
