As my closing thoughts, I want to share with each of you a story that has made its way around the internet a 1000 times and then some. I wish I could take credit for this wonderful piece but I can not. I am a writer of sorts but this one is not mine - please enjoy. I absolutely love this story........ It made me cry. Very touching.
There was once an 87 Year Old College Student Named Rose
On the first day of school, our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned round to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being.
She said, “Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I’m eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?”
I laughed and enthusiastically responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave me a giant squeeze. “Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?” I asked.
She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids…”
“No seriously,” I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.
“I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!” she told me.
After class, we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months, we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me. Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up. At the end of the semester, we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I’ll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three-by-five cards on the floor.
Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, “I’m sorry I’m so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I’ll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know.”
As we laughed she cleared her throat and began, “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die.
We have so many people walking around who are dead and don’t even know it! There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight.
Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunities in change. Have no regrets.
The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”
She concluded her speech by courageously singing “The Rose.”
She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives.
At the year’s end, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.
Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it’s never too late to be all you can possibly be. When you finish reading this, please send this peaceful word of advice to your friends and family, they’ll really enjoy it!
These words have been passed along in the loving memory of ROSE. REMEMBER, GROWING OLDER IS MANDATORY. GROWING UP IS OPTIONAL. We make a living by what we get, We make a Life by what we give."
Patriots, it takes so much more to stand up and live the life you dream of as a small child or young adult. I am 63 years old. I should have finished school in 1976 instead of my oldest daughter and I finished school in 2005 together. Afterward, we went to college. I had no desire to do so but she did and asked if I would go with her - I did. When I was born I was 10 and a half pounds-I was a whopper! In my 20’s I wanted to go fight and defend my country but they told me that I first had to lose 90 pounds - I lost 150. I took the test at least one for every branch of service but fate had it I always missed it by one or two points. Like Rose was talking about, I gave up for a time and returned to being as big around as I was tall...if that was possible. Thank goodness that didn’t last very long even though it felt like a lifetime...I had become a bum, worthless to everyone including myself.
I have always been strong-willed but there have been times when I needed a swift kick in the seat of the pants. Somewhere around the age of 22 -23, I went from sitting around on my mother’s sofa doing nothing with my life...no job, living off mom to working 2 full-time jobs and 3 part-time jobs. I did this for years until one day as I was entering a friend's shop a pain hit me in my back and took me to my knees. I might add that while working all these jobs I also started powerlifting in a local gym...I was looking damn good!
I lost a few jobs due to my back but I continued to work. By age 30 I got married to my soulmate and we had 4 children. After 2 years of saying I do, my back was so bad that I had to go on disability and I have been disabled for nearly 30 years but my story doesn’t stop there. Twice or three times a doctor...we all know about doctors right-told me I would die within 2 to 5 years...that was 25 plus years ago. They told me that I would have to stop going to the gym or I would end up in a wheelchair...for once I listened and ended up in a wheelchair until one day I said screw this. I got up, kicked the chair across the floor and returned to the gym.
I have broken my back since then, fell down the back porch steps, and still I refuse to give up! I am a writer (for my own enjoyment) who only had something in print once...the wife still gets mad at me for not attempting to get published. I’ve had two businesses and now I have this newsletter which is posted in more than 130 Patriot groups on Facebook alone and 30 plus other platforms on the internet. So some of you may be asking why I am telling you all this...because I do not give a damn what your age is, if you have a dream...follow it! These mandates are bullshit and most of you know it. Stop waiting for that knight in shiny armor to appear and set everything right- step up to the plate and follow your dreams at any cost! Doctors, lawyers, our wonderful government don’t know shit. Grab life by the gonads and push, pull, or twist into the direction you wish to go in. You only get one shot...in this life, make the best of it!
